Having the opportunity to sit down with Jo Malone, one of the most successful entrepreneurs responsible for revolutionising the beauty industry, marked a personal career highlight. Globally recognised for building the beauty brand eponymous with her name she is now creating Jo Loves. I was lucky enough to get a sample of the new range over a year ago and immediately fell in love with Red Truffle 21, which I have featured many times and adore. Over the best part of an hour sitting in the lobby of The Marker Hotel we discussed lifestyle, beauty, time management and who she admires. I left with her newest scent which is wrapped in the most heavenly thick icy white packaging and a big gorgeous ribbon. Her scents and candles are pure luxury and if you know someone who truly appreciates the loveliest things then I can think of no nicer gift.

What is your morning routine? 

I cleanse really well in the evening. After chemotherapy my skin is much more sensitive. In the evening I do a full cleanse with a hot towel and I moisturize at night or in the bath and the heat helps the moisturize sink in. I don’t like to moisturize in the morning as it makes my skin sticky. In the morning I do a light cleanse, put my base on and then my make up. It’s very simple and I can be ready in five minutes. I do masks twice a week. I also make my own mask with yogurt, lemon juice, and honey if your skin is dry. I love things like apricot kernels, avocado or jojoba oil and a spoonful of oatmeal. 
Normally I’m up at 6.30 and I make a fresh green (spinach, kale, broccoli) and red juice (banana, rasperries, blueberries, strawberries, followed twenty minutes later with coffee.

Have you any particular techniques for time management and goal setting? 

I am a big list maker. Every day I have an A4 notepad and I have a pen with a thick end and a thin and the thick end has to be done that day and the thin by the end of the week. Everything is in columns. If I have an asterix by it, it has to be achieved in the hour. I’m quite good at time management. I’m good at multi-tasking, as most women are. I can cook dinner while on a briefing call. If I’m changing the bed I’ll be on speaker on a call. I’ve got great people to delegate to though.

How do you maintain your health while living such a busy lifestyle?

I would say a busy lifestyle induces healthy living because when you are doing a job and doing something you enjoy and love, being with people you love, it's one of the healthiest things – you feel fulfilled, contented and that’s real healthy living.
 It’s good to be busy. I’ve gone through anxiety and I found the way out is to occupy your mind, getting out, walking the dog, distracting your mind.

Do you live your brand or is it something you leave at the office over the weekend? 

It’s not a job, or a career. I love it. I love what I do. In saying that we have certain rules as a family. We have dinner every night as a family together. Everyone does their thing but you can’t have your phones round the table or during that time. That’s our family time. You’ve to be disciplined when your kids need you at school, or sports day, I turn my phone off. 

Have you ever developed a product that you personally loved but wasn't a professional success? What was the end result? 

Yes – a moisturizer I make for my own skin. My skin is agitated if I put the wrong thing on it and it blisters. I started out in skincare. It’s never been a commercial product; it’s just for me.

In terms of developing into a lifestyle brand how do you handle hiring key members of staff, and ensure they remain true to your message? 

First of all we as a company I think we have the happiest team as a family I have ever had in over 35 years. I look at them as family. I don’t want replicas of me. I would say I am a tough boss. I demand no more of anyone else than I‘m prepared to give. When I don’t like something they know. When I do like something they know. We have a good news Friday where we sit and we share everything great that has happened during the week. What happens is the whole atmosphere changes. 
When you choose key members you want people who are better than you. Don’t be threatened by someone who is better than you as that’s where growth comes from. I do a very different interview. I want to know about the person, who you are, how you think, how you react. I’m looking for someone who’s going to challenge me and I don’t mind if you disagree with me so long as you can back it up. I’m looking for passion and an entrepreneurial spirit. 

In business as technology evolves do you delegate or are you keen to know how to do it all yourself? 

I delegate. I’m dyslexic and don’t even know how to turn the computer on. I trust Sarah, Charlotte, Jess to travel around the world and share the message. Everything has my stamp. Everyone presents to me for approval as at the end of the day it’s got my name on it.

Which women in business do you admire ?

Both Anya Hindmarch and Louise Kennedy. Adele is the epitome of being who she is in her craft and what she does. I admire anybody that gets up and does something and motivates themselves and works. Someone who doesn’t sit there and moan and say I wish that was me.  If you want that to be you, you get up and you make it work.
