My Wellness Essentials and Lifestyle Tips*
For the past few months I have been working with Meagher’s Pharmacy and I love the MD Oonagh’s ethos. She feels typically people associate going to the pharmacy with being ill but actually there are so many wellness resources available in-store. This past year in particular I have really upped my self-care and thankfully as a result have avoided feeling run down at a time when I am busier than ever. There are a few simple things that I have woven into my day-to-day life and products I buy and use consistently and I wanted to share them here.
I hope you enjoy and find these little steps useful.
Scent Your Home as Naturally as Possible
I don’t use any air-freshener products at home and avoid any synthetic fragranced cleaning products also. There is some research about the dangers of certain air freshener products so I just avoid them. At home I use a few drops of aromatherapy oil in a diffuser. You can customise and mix and match your own blends but typically I love clean citrus scents like lemon, orange and grapefruit as well as lavender. You can also put a few drops into a spray bottle of water use it to mist your clothing and furniture naturally. I also recently found Irish brand Celtic Candles in Meaghers and love them. The Tea Tree and Lemon is so fresh and the glass jar is easy to recycle.
There’s an Organic and Natural Solution for Every Bodycare Need
Your skin is the largest organ and naturally absorbs what you put on it. Thankfully brands are developing more and more organic options and I have noticed a huge reduction in sensitivity without compromising on results since switching to organic. I’m a big believer in regular exfoliation and I use a dry skin brush weekly. I also love seaweed based body products as it’s an Irish naturally renewable resource that is full of minerals and iodine that are so beneficial for our skin. Two fabulous Irish natural product ranges made with seaweed are Seavite and Green Angel. When it comes to tanning I have tried lots of organic ranges and being honest most were hit and miss. I do love the Vita Liberata Ten Minute Tan though. The colour is beautiful and it’s very moisturising. I leave it on for about 45 minutes before rinsing though and I get a natural colour that I love.
Use a Natural Toothpaste and an Aluminium Free Deodorant
I am gradually moving my whole lifestyle towards a more natural approach. Nowadays there is rarely a gap in the market and I’ve found an easy alternative for almost everything. Most conventional deodorants contain a list of toxic ingredients, such as aluminum chlorohydrate, parabens, propylene glycol and triclosan. Aluminum-based compounds are the active ingredient in antiperspirants so I look for natural alternatives. One product I’m currently using is Indeora which is an Irish magnesium based product that smells of vanilla and coconut. I’ve written a lot about my holistic dental routine >here< but I also stick to a natural toothpaste as well.
Make Magnesium and Epsom Salt Baths A Regular Thing
A simple bath can heal on more levels than I can put into words. During the really cold months there’s nothing nicer to warm you up than a 20 minute soak. I love adding in some Epsom salts or the Better You magnesium flakes to my bath. Magnesium plays a key role in regulating the body's stress-response system. Magnesium deficiency is associated with heightened stress and anxiety and if you train regularly this simple step will also help ease aching joints.
Snack Well and Be Prepared
I work mostly from home but sometimes I can be out on a shoot or at events.
I was asked recently to define self-care and after thinking about it I realised it can be anything from waking up an extra 10 minutes earlier so as not to be in a rush, to taking an hour out for a yoga class. Self care is about listening to what your body and mind needs and prioritising it and also preparing and planning for what you might want. Really simple things such as ensuring I have the ingredients to make a quick snack or packing an energy bar in my bag is a small thing but it makes a difference.
I’m going to do a more detailed post on the supplements I take. I don’t always supplement but from time to time, especially if I’m going through a period of high stress or working on a deadline I notice a difference. Iron and B12 in particular are important and these Better You versions are very handy and quick to take. You just need 4 pumps of each. The B12 is actually delicious.
Consume Live Foods and Probiotics Frequently
Probiotics Help Balance The Friendly Bacteria in Your Digestive System and I feel make a huge difference in terms of how I feel overall.
I take Symprove daily now. I first bought it back in January and did the full 12 weeks and by then end I didn’t want to stop. I have a really sensitive digestion and feel a lot of emotion in my gut. Things like a meal out or a holiday used to present discomfort occasionally but since taking my digestive health more seriously I don’t really have issues anymore. The Symprove doesn’t have to be refrigerated until it’s opened so it’s perfect to take in my bag away. I also use Apple Cider Vinegar in baking and also for salad dressings. When you’re buying it be sure it contains ‘the mother’ so you know it’s live and unpasteurised.
Enjoy Matcha and Mint Tea
I love coffee but I limit myself to one a day. Sometimes if I get to an early morning yoga class I’ll stop in a coffee shop and take 20 minutes to enjoy and get my thoughts clear for the day. At home I stick to water, green tea or Matcha. There are amazing studies on Matcha tea and it contains 137 times more antioxidants than greet tea. Antioxidants are substances that may protect your cells against the effects of free radicals — molecules produced when your body breaks down food or is exposed to tobacco smoke and radiation.
I always have mint tea in the evening and last thing at night. It really helps with digestion. This Pukka blend contains peppermint leaf, spearmint leaf and fieldmint and tastes delicious. It’s also caffeine free so perfect to have before bed.
